Make Adjustments When Moving a Pet

Pet GroomingMoving to a new place can upset your pet’s routine and thus level of comfort. When you first arrive at your new home, give your pet time to adjust to his new surroundings. If possible, do not change his regular feeding and walking times for the first few days. Don’t introduce new people yet, and keep favorite toys nearby. As you encounter more changes in your new environment, try your best to make your pet feel comfortable and happy.

For example, when I moved to Washington for a new job, I took my Siberian husky, Maya, with me. After letting her settle in, I needed to make arrangements for her care while I did some traveling for business. I initially took her to a dog kennel in Seattle. I could tell she didn’t like it, so the next time we tried out a different dog day care. Seattle, I was pleased to find, offered a lot of these kinds of businesses, and I looked around until I found a place that Maya seemed to like. Eventually, I found a great establishment that provided dog boarding. Seattle, however, posed another change in our routine.

It is rainy there, and my dog’s hair began to get matted from the constant water–more so than when we lived in California. I took Maya to a service that did dog grooming in Seattle. They told me to brush her hair more regularly and to bathe her twice a month. Previously I had only bathed her once a month. I never thought that dog grooming in Seattle would be different than in Los Angeles, but, as I discovered, a lot of things can change when you move to a new location. Make adjustments to ensure your dog’s optimal comfort.
